Kevin Barlow 8th Dan - International Referee
Kevin Barlow

Kevin began training in 1973 aged 11 years.

Kevin was a member of the UK 1st Shukokai Karate group founded by Roy Stanhope. Kevin achieved 1st Dan in 1979 with Japanese master Shigeru Kimura. Over the years Kevin has competed in many interclub, National/International tournaments achieving status at Light/Middle weight in 3 disciplines. Individual & Team Kumite, Kata. He was a former member of the Shukokai England Karate Squad, plus he has represented UKASKO at the EKF/ BKF Karate National/ European Championships.

For over 20 years with UKASKO Kevin competed at the highest level. Kevin retired from competitive Karate in 1996, in the same year took over as England Coach with an unbeaten record. Key roles with the organisation are National Kata / Kumite Coach. Technical grading examiner. Level 3 Coaching Assessment Officer, International Judge - Referee, tournament director. Most recently Kevin has become a Duke of Edinburgh Awards assessor. On the basis of his work and achievements within UKASKO, Kevin was awarded his 8th Dan as a mark of respect for all he has done for the Association.

Over the years Kevin has conducted many Karate and Self defensive seminars both to the public and professional agencies. Most recently Kevin has been training/teaching with the Greater Manchester Police Karate Team.


Garry Lewis 6th Dan - Chief Referee
Garry Lewis

Garry began the art of Shukokai Karate in 1985 at the age of 17 under Sensei Ossie Rowe in the Shukokai Karate Federation, during this time he had the chance to train on numerous occasions with Sensei Eddie Daniels and Master Shigeru Kimura and won the National Championships in Kumite.

He joined the United Kingdom All Styles Karate Organisation in 1990, during which time he has represented the association at both Kata and Kumite.

Garry passed his Black Belt 1st Dan at the national black belt gradings under Hanshi Stanhope in 1994 going on to pass his 2nd Dan in 1999, 3rd Dan in 2002, 4th Dan 2007 ,5th Dan 2012 and being awarded his 6th Dan in 2018 .


Garry is also a Level III Coach, Association Dan Grade Examiner and the UKMAF/UKASKO Chief Referee.


Fred Bateman 6th Dan - National Referee
Fred Bateman

Fred is 6th Dan Black Belt in Karate, 4th Dan in Matayoshi Kobudo (weapons), and a 1st Dan in Kickboxing. He has trained in Aikido, Ninjutsu and Iaido (sword art). A very experienced Martial Artist who has spent time and graded in Okinawa and Japan under the tutelage of Kaicho Takiashi Kinjo (10th Dan) and Mikio Nishiuchi (7th Dan).


Fred has competed with the UKASKO's international squad, and is the Associations former Chief Referee. He has been a well respected Kumite and Kata Referee for the English Karate Governing Body (EKGB).


Julius Manyoni 6th Dan - National Referee
Julius Manyoni

Julius Manyoni 6th Dan started Martial Arts training back in 1978 in Lau Gar Kung Fu. At University of Sussex Julius joined a Wado Ryu Karate class and found his passion for the style. Before graduating he started his own Club at Cox Lane, West Ewell and called it Epsom & Ewell Karate Club after joining UKASKO in 1987 as a brown belt now teaching Freestyle Karate. Later that year he gained his first Dan under Hanshi Stanhope and Julius has never looked back.

All his Dan gradings were under Hanshi Stanhope, including all his students. Julius was awarded 6th Dan by Hanshi Stanhope in 2013, and has won top ten instructors award for several years.

With a series of competition successes including UKASKO National Champion 1997 and UKASKO international for several years, he was appointed UKASKO Southern Area Coach in 1992 and position he held for 5 years and then re-appointed in 2009.


Steve Langbridge 7th Dan - Regional Referee
Steve Langbridge

Steve started training in 1972 under Master Tatso Suzuki in Wado Ryu at the Judd Street Dojo in London until leaving London in 1980. In 1980 he joined a Shotokan club in his home town High Wycombe and a another Wado club where he continues to train today.

Gaining his 1st Dan in 1991 he took on full running of the South Bucks Karate Academy. He was awarded his 5th Dan by Hanshi Stanhope in March 2012.

Steve has has this unquestionable thirst for knowledge, so has been training for 6 years in American Kenpo.

Steve is also a Level III Coach, Association Dan Grade Examiner and Association Regional Referee.


Ian Andrews 5th Dan - National Referee
Ian Andrews

Ian Andrews 5th Dan started his karate training at Epsom & Ewell training in 1988 under Sensei Julius Manyoni 6th Dan and gained his Black Belt 1st Dan with Hanshi Roy Stanhope in 1993, and subsequently gaining 2nd, 3rd and 4th Dan. Ian was awarded 5th Dan in 2012 by Hanshi Stanhope.

Ian also trained in Kyohushin karate while still a student at Epsom & Ewell to gain experience with another style. In 2008 Ian joined other members of UKASKO on a trip to Japan to train with Master Yagi.

Ian attended all the UKASKO courses both as competitor and referee, including the EKGB referees course in London. Ian began teaching in 1992 and during this period Epsom & Ewell Karate Club was hosting the UKASKO Southern Area championships, and Ian was the main referee. Ian is currently a level 2 coach and Association National Referee.

Michael Wilde 5th Dan - Regional Referee
Michael Wilde

Michael commenced his martial arts in Taiho-Jutsu beginning in 1972 whilst serving with the Police Force.

He then became a Police Instructor specialising in First Aid, Self Defence (Taiho-Jutsu) Conflict Management, Side Handled Baton, Quick Cuffs and CS Spray.

He began Training Shukokai Karate in 1990 under Sensei Rowe in the United Kingdom All Styles Karate Organisation.

Michael is currently a 5th Dan Black Belt, Level 3 Coach and Association Regional Referee.

Duwain Chase 3rd Dan - National Referee
Duwain Chase

Duwain commenced his training in Freestyle Shukokai Karate under Sensei Brian Seabright of the British Karate Federation in 1993. He later joined United Kingdom All Styles Karate Organisation in 1998 training in Traditional Shukokai Karate under Sensei Osmond Rowe.

Duwain has represented the United Kingdom All Styles Karate Organisation England Kumite since 2003 and gained his Black Belt 1st Dan in 2005 under Sensei Rowe.

He is currently a Black Belt 3rd Dan, Level 2 Coach and Association Regional Referee.
